Yay or Nay?: What We Do In The Shadows (Movie)

An oldie but a goodie, I loved this movie with every aspect. “What We Do In Shadows” directed by Taika Watiti (sorry if I misspelled!) is amazing. I bring up the director because you may know him as the guy who did “Thor 3: Ragnarok”. Just so you know, if you loved the humor on that—and haven’t seen this film yet, you’ll love this movie, or rather, a mockumentary.

And by the way, Deacon is my favorite character, followed by Vladislav and then Petyr. I’ll explain in a bit, but for those who don’t get why Petyr is one of the best, it’s all in the reactions he has.

But Deacon, Deacon is my spirit animal.

Oh, and all the gifs will be from the movie. Just so you can witness the greatness of this little Kickstarter masterpiece that’s getting a sequel this year if I’ve heard right.

The Story

A documentary crew gets access to the everyday lives of four vampires—Viago, Deacon, Vlad, and Petyr. They follow them around as they get into shenanigans, including meeting a werewolf, playing practical jokes, and trying to the bloody dishes!

All in time for a special “Unholy” ball that’s held once a year by a Secret Society made up of undead creatures.

No time for this Twilight shit either, these are real vampires—like your Anne Rice types, but of course with a comical edge.

Yes, the story is small because the jokes and amazing characters make up for the rest of the show. I promise you that unlike Twilight, this is a good vampire movie

By the way, that moment in "Thor 3" was in reference to this one!

My Thoughts

Well, as you can likely tell, I’m more than happy with this film. The jokes, the story, the characters, they’re all on point. This is a movie that doesn’t take itself too seriously and likes to have a lot of fun with itself. This movie, originally a Kickstarter project, it’s one you wouldn’t originally look at and think “huh, this was an independently funded project”. It looks really good and sounds amazing for the budget it had.

The humor is a mix of puns and just really casual jokes—as well as a little bit of gory humor and horror, as a true gothic vampire/monster movie would be. There’s twists and turns in the oddly simplistic story, and along with the humor you can really get invested in the characters themselves, who just want to live their lives, feed on some virgins, and get along as flatmates and attend a good party.

Overall, it’s actually the first movie I think that has firstly, made me start laughing from start to finish, and also, probably the only vaguely “horror” movie I’ve watched through to the end.  A lot of people talk about wishing they could go back to the first time they saw this movie and do it all again, and they’re right. The first time you see this movie you WILL be enjoying yourself and having a good time. But that experience, that surprise, and enjoyment at the jokes and the twists, it only happens once, and then you know the movie inside and out. You’ll enjoy it countless times after that, but it just won’t be the same. I do wish that sometimes I could rewatch the movie as if it was my first time but alas I can’t. That’s okay, I still love the movie for everything. Especially this line:

I think that I laughed for about 15 minutes when I heard this. I don’t know why but it was just that good. And I encourage you all to see this movie! Right away.

My Rating

Go buy, rent, whatever! But get this movie and watch it, I will guarantee that if you liked “Thor 3” you will not regret watching “What We Do In The Shadows”.

My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
