Yay or Nay?: The Truth (Podcast)
This is a podcast I came across during my search for a good workout one to listen to after I finished Limetown. Which, if you haven’t gotten the chance to listen to, you should. It’s not a finished series yet but is somewhere between a thriller, mystery, and has a style similar to Serial.
Regardless. Looking for that perfect podcast can be tricky, and for me is a daunting task. Trust me, I’m super picky about what I listen to—and what kind of story that it has to offer. But this search ultimately led me to this podcast I’m going to talk about— The Truth, which, although it sounds like a fanatical religious show, is not. And for you viewers who enjoy the good story, or stories in great quantities, I’d like to tell you that this is the farmer’s market or little local boutique shops of literature.
KNOWLEDGE
Now I can cry to this podcast while also crying about the fact my heart is pounding, my abs are burning, and I generally just want the workout to be over! But now I can also be entertained while doing this.
The Story
In this case, The Truth is not a single, unified storyline, but each episode a different short serial of a story, or small short story. The genres can range from any kind, fiction, non-fiction, romance, tragedy, thriller. Usually, their stories are non-creative fiction or a mix of thriller and mystery, but you get the odd nugget of other genres mixed in as well. Which is why in this case you could probably start wherever you’d like in the series. Although there is a set episode list, what I’ve done is gone with whatever title seems interesting to me. Episode length can vary anywhere from 20-40 minutes (sometimes even longer).
Consider this podcast an auditory library of short snippets, written by different authors and authors as well as various performers (some new, some not). As I say, a variety of not exactly local but sometimes new or upcoming authors. As I say, your local small-business of literary and auditory exposure!
My Thoughts
All around this is my first time experiencing a podcast like this—developed in small serial segments, of different stories ranging from different elements. For me, it’s insanely clever. As I was looking for constant new stories, this podcast had a solution. They cover a wide and endless bout of material, and the stories are damn good too. Not all of them I consider particularly juicy or my type—but that’s the beauty of it, there’s something for everyone.
My only real criticism is that some of the stories are sometimes really similar and sometimes (probably coincidentally) seem to sound the same. Then again it could just be a certain recurring theme that the show likes, or wants to air in its programming, which is totally fine. But this is a great show to do work with or to spend an afternoon on. You won’t get through all the episodes, as there’s a great deal of them, but it’s like having an expansive library of audiobooks at your disposal. Actually, it’s a mix of literature and theatre, as the voice narrators are the active characters of the story, and there’s sometimes a commentary afterward about the story just told.
The English Major in me loves that. I’m a nerd for that shit.
This also kinda reminds me of soap operas or radio shows being brought back to light in the form of a podcast. We’ve come full circle from the 40s-50s people. Regardless, not seeing but just hearing and imagining, as you would when you read has its own charms. It’s an experience, and if you like to read books, you’ll love this.
My Rating
Check it out! They’re on the Apple Store, as that’s where I access them. But this podcast has been around for a bit so they’re probably very accessible in other formats too!
Give it a listen!
