Yay or Nay? Game Night (Movie)
I remember seeing
the trailer a few months back thinking "This looks so dumb and bad".
But being bored, and feeling intrigued by the very good reviews that it's been
getting, I decided to venture out to the theater for some mindless fun.
And I must say I was
very positively surprised! The story was suspenseful as well as unpredictable,
and a few of the jokes made me laugh out loud (as well as a few other people in
the theater too).
The Story
Jason Bateman and
Rachel McAdams' characters are obsessed with games. Literally. They dance on
DDR machines in their wedding, host game nights regularly, etc. Poor Jason
Bateman is even so stressed with the competition that he has, ummm, fertility
issues because of it
One of his
insecurities is his rivalry he has with his brother. So, things kick off when
the brother invites them over for games at his house. They are supposed to play
a make believe murder mystery type of game. But then the brother ends up
getting kidnapped for real, and the rest of the crew have to play for real to
save him, while getting involved in various hijinks.
They totally look qualified to do the job |
My Thoughts
It was
quite funny. Not always in a most intelligent way, but even then it suited the
characters' personalities. These could have the ability to make a shitty day
slightly better :-)
Now the
actual story could have been very chaotic, considering the several different
subplots and twists. That would not have me happy. More likely I'd step out of
the theater for a few moments to buy some rotten tomatoes at Walmart to throw
on the screen.
Thankfully,
this was not the case :-) The twists were completely unexpected, I could not
believe where the story was going some of the time. And yet everything tied
together very nicely at the end.
Now this
film wasn't perfect, some of the writing seemed a bit weird. But it doesn't
matter, the rest was totally fun and awesome.
So this
is a YAY! It is a fun movie, great to relax to, and better than it seems.
